Human Resources at MIT

Your Checklists

Your First Week

There are a number of "must dos" for new faculty and employees.

This checklist outlines tasks that should be a priority in your first week at MIT—if you haven't taken care of them already.

Checklist—Your First Week

Get your MIT I.D.

An MIT I.D. is your passport to the campus—it opens doors to places like the libraries and the fitness center and can even be used as a debit card. Find out what it does and how and where to obtain it at the official MIT Card site.

Complete required forms and register your personal information.

Use the online Employee Self Service Center [requires MIT certificates] to register your preferences for tax withholding, arrange direct deposit, enroll in benefits programs, make changes to your contact information, and perform other vital functions quickly and efficiently. Return to this site whenever you wish to make a change. You can begin using the Employee Self Service Center the third business day after you request your Kerberos I.D.

Enroll in Benefits.

You must enroll in the following benefits within 31 days from receipt of your "Welcome Letter." Click here to review your eligibility and to enroll.

  • Dental Plan
  • Health Plan
  • Flexible Spending Account
  • 401(k) Plan
  • Supplemental Life
  • Vision Plan

Orient yourself.

We'd like to welcome you to campus—in person. If you haven't already received a letter inviting you to take a campus tour, you can sign up by sending e-mail to staffingservices@mit.edu. The tour will help you to find your way around the main streets and byways of MIT and concludes with a welcome reception, when you'll have the opportunity to meet members of the community and ask questions.

Sign MIT's intellectual property agreement.

The Invention and Proprietary Information Agreement was designed to clarify issues surrounding the creation of intellectual property at MIT. All employees must sign and submit this form. Complete a new form if your status has changed—for example, from student to employee. Get details, download the form, and find out where to submit it.

Submit Form I-9.

Within your first three days of employment, the federal government requires that you submit the Employment Eligibility and Verification form—Form I-9. It's easy to do. Just download the PDF, fill out the form, and present it to your supervisor with your ID. Acceptable forms of ID are described on the form.

Stay safe.

Learn how to maintain a safe, healthy, and green environment by visiting the Environmental Health & Safety website... and don't forget to check out the Staying Safe page on this site. MIT employees may be required to complete safety training before they can begin work in laboratories and environments that require special awareness and preparation. Download the "Environment, Health & Safety Needs Assessment" PDF to determine your responsibility.

Register with the International Scholars Office, if appropriate.

If you are an international faculty member or scholar on an academic appointment, be sure to register with the International Scholars Office upon arrival at MIT.
