Presenter: Deborah Fitzgerald, Dean of the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences
She has a personal commitment to reducing waste that has inspired her whole community at the Edgerton Center. She has set up a recycling station, a compost bin, and a collection of mugs to reduce the use of paper coffee cups. More impressively, she encourages environmentally conscious behavior in all her colleagues by being ‘an amazing role model.’ One nominator said she now carries utensils so she doesn’t have to use disposable ones. Another said she keeps cloth grocery bags in her car. ‘I am much more aware,’ she said, ‘of ways to do my part aside from the usual recycling.’ As a Green Ambassador for the Campus Energy Task Force, she also works to promote more sustainable practices throughout MIT.
These tasks are not part of her job as an energetic teacher in the K-12 Outreach Program, but they are crucial to Greening MIT. Thank you, Jessica Garrett.
