- Department-Based Skill and Knowledge Programs
As a manager, you can encourage teams to create internal learning programs focused on acquiring knowledge and skills specific to the job and department. Different approaches to learning can be used:
- classroom training
- online resources
- reading groups
- brief seminars
- on-the-job assignments
A department-based program can be a productive way to foster cross-training, and also an opportunity for experienced staff to share knowledge and expertise. Internal development programs use expertise within the department and MIT.
- Development Planning Seminars
To support professional development, managers can sponsor a customized development planning seminar for employees. The purpose is to enable employees to identify short-term development goals in their current role and department, and as well as identify potential long-term career development options. The development seminar can also be used to help employees prepare for a development conversation with their manager.
