Eligibility for Benefits

Who is Eligible

The benefit programs of the Institute are immediately available to all employees who are appointed at least 50 percent time, with a minimum appointment period of three months, and who are paid by MIT (some plans require a longer appointment period; see below for details on each plan). If you have questions about your specific eligibility for any program, please contact us.

Who is NOT Eligible

Ineligible titles include: Visitors*, contractors, affiliates, teaching or research assistants, honorary lecturers, post-doctoral trainees, people paid by MITemps, summer appointments, non-MIT student program workers, international visiting students, members of the armed services assigned to MIT, students in work study programs and family members not employed by MIT. * Visitors are entitled to some benefits including health, dental, and reimbursement accounts if they have at least a 3 month appointment.

New Employee Eligibility

If you are a new employee: You may enroll in benefit plans within 31 days of your date of hire or appointment, or within 31 days of when you first receive the Welcome Packet, whichever is later. When you enroll, you may elect coverage as of your date of hire or the first of the month following your date of hire. New employees can click here to sign up for benefits.

If you are a member of a collective bargaining unit, all the provisions of the Plans are subject to the terms of your collective bargaining agreement.
