1. How may I submit my resume?
Once you have identified a position that matches your qualifications, please apply on-line. You will need to complete a profile first. Once your profile is complete, you may apply with or without a resume by choosing the appropriate button at the bottom of the page. Please note that submitting your resume more than once for the same job will not increase your chances of being contacted. return
2. What if I do not have a resume?
If you do not have a resume, you may apply by completing the on-line application form by using the link on the search page. You will, however, have to first complete a profile. return
3. May I apply for more than one position at a time?
You may apply up to three different positions at the same time, BUT the same resume and cover letter will be associated with each position. To submit a cover letter and or resume targeted for a specific position of interest, you should apply separately (e.g., have only one job listed in your Job Cart when you click one of the "Apply" buttons). At this time, it is the only way to connect the appropriate cover letter to its corresponding position. return
4. May I include a cover letter with my resume, and if so, to whom shall I address it?
It is not necessary to address a cover letter to a specific individual. If you would like to include a cover letter, please paste it in the appropriate text box. Note that when applying to multiple jobs at the same time, the same cover letter goes to all hiring managers. To customize your cover letter, apply to each job individually. return
5. May I send in my resume without specifying interest in a particular position/job number?
No. Our current system does not provide a vehicle for submitting unsolicited resumes. return
6. If I submit a resume on-line, should I also mail a copy for the same position?
No, unless the job description specifically requests that additional information be submitted. In most cases, one resume submitted via the web site is sufficient. If you receive the confirmation message and e-mail, you can be sure that we received your application. return
7. If a job was posted a few months ago and remains on the web site, is it really still open?
Yes. We update the job postings frequently. If a job is listed on our web site, it is considered open. Please be aware some jobs take longer to fill than others and may remain open for longer periods of time. If a department has a specific close date in mind, it will be noted in the job description section of the posting. return
8. How do I find out the salary range for a particular position?
The number or letter which follows the job number in the description section of the posting represents the position's level or grade, e.g., mit-00001234-5 or mit-00001234-N. (Numbers represent support staff and letters represent administrative/exempt staff.) You may check the corresponding salary range for a position by visiting http://web.mit.edu/hr/staffing/salary.html.
If no code appears, the salary range will depend upon experience and available funding. return
9. The salary ranges are quite wide. What can I expect as a starting salary?
Years and type of experience, internal equity, and external market data are reviewed in order to determine starting salaries. return
10. How do I know that you received my on-line resume?
Once you have submitted a resume, a pop-up window will appear thanking you for your submission. This is your confirmation that we have received your resume. If a problem occurs during the transmission of your resume, a pop-up window will appear citing the reason for the problem. You will be asked to resubmit your resume at that time. If you supply an e-mail address, you will also receive an e-mail confirmation within 24 hours. If you provide an e-mail address and don't receive confirmation, it is likely that the address was entered incorrectly. return
11. What happens to my resume once I submit it?
Your background and qualifications will be reviewed by a recruiter or the hiring department. If they feel that there is an appropriate match between your skills and qualifications and those required in the position, you will be contacted. We receive resumes from many qualified applicants and regret that we are not always able to provide ongoing information on the status of a resume once it is forwarded to the hiring department. return
12. When will I hear back from MIT?
When you apply on-line, you will receive immediate web notification and an additional e-mail (if you supply an e-mail address) confirming that your material has been received. Please understand that the review process takes time. You will be contacted by the hiring department or a recruiter if either feels that an initial screening would be appropriate. return
13. Is there someone I can call to follow up with regarding my interest in MIT?
Due to the high volume of applicants interested in employment at MIT, you must wait to be contacted by a hiring department or recruiter. We receive resumes from many qualified applicants and regret that we are not always able to provide ongoing information on the status of a resume once it is forwarded to the hiring department. return
14. May I contact the hiring department to find out more about the job?
The hiring departments prefer that you not contact them directly. You are welcome to visit the web site(s) of the department(s) that interest you in order to find out more about the work being done there. return
15. What if I am interested in a faculty or teaching position?
The Staffing Services Office does not handle faculty or teaching appointments other than the occasional lecturer or technical instructor. Please contact the appropriate academic department for information on faculty positions. return
16. Are non-U.S. citizens eligible for employment at MIT?
Individuals with permanent residence (green cards) are eligible to work. Please be aware that only those in positions directly related to the mission of the Institute (teaching and research) are sponsored for visas.
For more information about the hiring of non-US citizens, please visit the following web sites:
17. Where can I find out more about student employment?
Information on student employment can be found on the Student Employment Office web site or that of the Careers Office. return
18. Are internships offered through Human Resources?
No. For more information about internship possibilities, please see the web site of the department that you're interested in. Information may also be available in the Student Employment Office or Careers Office. return
19. Does HR post summer or temporary job openings?
While we do post occasional temporary positions, we rarely have summer openings. We would recommend that you perform occasional key word searches using the word "temporary." Our web site is updated frequently so please check in often. return
20. Does MIT have a preferred list of temporary agencies with which it works?
The list of partner agencies can be found on the Procurement Department's web site at http://controllers.mit.edu/site/procurement/partners/mit_partner_vendors. return
