The chart below explains sick leave accruals and use for hourly and monthly paid staff, according to whether the employee is benefits eligible or non-benefits eligible.

Amount of sick leave

MIT policy

  • 12 days per year credited on anniversary date
  • In 1st year, 1 day per month accrues for the first 6 months; then 6 days are added to the sick leave balance
  • Unused amounts carry over, up to cap (192 days for support staff)

Statutory formula

  • 1 hour of sick time accrues for every 30 hours worked, up to a cap of 40 hours
  • Unused amounts carry over year to year, always subject to cap of 40 hours

Eligibility

 Same as for general benefits eligibility

  • Appointment for at least 3 months
  • At least 17.5 hours per week
  • In a benefits-eligible title

 

All non-benefits eligible hourly paid
staff except:

  • Graduate students are not eligible
  • Undergrads are eligible to accrue and use sick time only for work done in  the summer

Vesting period of 90 days before employee can use paid sick time

Use

Accrued sick time is used for

  • Employee's illness and medical appointments
  • Sick family members' illness and medical appointments (up to 40 hours in a 12
    month period, counted from employee's anniversary date)
  • Leaves relating to domestic violence (up to 40 hours in a 12 month period)
  • 3 days in the 12 month period can be used for personal leave

Accrued sick time is used for

  • Employee's illness and medical appointments
  • Sick family members' illness and medical appointments
  • Leaves relating to domestic violence

Again, accruals are capped at 40 hours

Increments

Employees can use and record sick time in 15 minute increments

Amount of sick leave

  • A reasonable number of sick days is paid in full; for a serious illness, generally up to 6 months
  • Tracker does not show accrual of
    sick time

Statutory formula

  • Accrual based on 1 hour of sick time/ 30 hours worked up to a cap of 40 hours
  • Unused amounts carry over year to year, always subject to cap of 40 hours

Accrual is calculated in the tool based on the length of the appointment and % effort (assuming a 40 hour full time work week)

  • Total accrual is front loaded

Eligibility

  • In benefits-eligible title
