The next recipients of the Serving the Client Award are a vital component of MIT’s safety culture. We are recognizing the 11 members of the Regulated Medical Waste Management Team today for their absolute dedication to safety—and for innovations that are making MIT researchers more productive. This team from the Office of Environment, Health & Safety and the Department of Biology takes charge of the disposal of biohazards from the Institute’s research laboratories. Team members assessed the process of regulated medical waste management across MIT and created new, improved, cost-effective methods for disposing of contaminated materials.

This dedicated team developed a highly successful pilot program with the Department of Biology using a leading-edge “bio burn box” for more efficient disposal of “sharps.” Their innovation represents dramatic savings of

• time—at least 3000 hours per year
• money—about $40K a year, when the new system is fully implemented, • energy—elimination of over 11,000 autoclave cycles a year.

The Biology test program has been so successful that other departments are eager to get on board.
