Jarek Koniusz

The Department of Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation is graced by an associate professor who is also the head coach of the women’s and men’s fencing teams. As a teacher and coach, he invests himself in the development of his students, inspiring them through his own hard work to increase their skills and connections in the DAPER community. This is man of action, constantly transforming his font of ideas into ways to maximize resources and community.

The creative sources of revenue that he identified are really ways to connect people with one another. It was his idea to convert the old squash courts to an indoor golf simulator, now a jewel in the crown of DAPER facilities. The newly established MIT Fencing Club augments his culture of mentoring by attracting the Boston community of fencers to MIT, and the resulting increase in DAPER membership supports all athletic programs. He nurtures connections with department alumni in myriad ways, including linking the goals of the Campaign for Students with the needs of MIT fencers and leading students in a “Thank-a-thon” to express appreciation for alumni support.

With thanks from his department, its students, and alumni, we recognize Jarek Koniusz for exceptional enrichment to DAPER community life. Congratulations.
