Advancing Inclusion and Global Perspectives: Maximizing MIT's strengths

This award is for teams and/or individuals who:

  • Promote an inclusive workplace by inviting diverse viewpoints, encouraging collaboration, and modeling appreciation and respect towards colleagues
  • Embrace MIT's priority of global leadership and communicate the importance of global/cultural sensitivity in the workplace: act as a cultural interpreter and actively work to resolve conflicts due to cultural differences 
  • Help MIT engage and retain employees by ensuring all individuals and groups are represented and feel included, leveraging differences for a more effective, innovative, and productive workplace  
  • Raise awareness and educate others at the local level about Institute-wide inclusion and global efforts through communication and follow-up activities 
  • Examine existing practices, policies and systems for unintended and/or historic bias, and work to broaden these structures to reflect multiple perspectives 

Innovative Solutions: Collaborating for results

This award is for teams and/or individuals who:

  • Participate in collaborative problem-solving, breaking down boundaries and/or creating new relationships to improve the way work gets done
  • Embrace change as an opportunity for growth and innovation
  • Plan and implement strategies that are in the best interests of the organization
  • Take a proactive and innovative approach toward finding sustainable solutions to business challenges
  • Demonstrate a high degree of financial responsibility coupled with sound judgement

Bringing out the Best: Everyday leadership throughout MIT

This award is for teams and/or individuals who:

  • Develop trust and credibility through open, respectful communication and demonstrating accountability
  • Provide a sense of purpose, vision and mission for their co-workers and/or staff
  • Positively influence others to build consensus in group, departmental or organizational settings
  • Manage and/or champion change effectively through formal or informal leadership
  • Help others develop by investing time and effort in coaching and/or mentoring

Serving the Client: Providing consistent and exceptional service

This award is for teams and/or individuals who:

  • Take the initiative to improve the value and efficiency of the services they provide
  • Maintain a consistently high quality of service to Institute customers including students, faculty, staff, alumni, and external clients
  • Anticipate clients' needs and potential problems before they arise
  • Create new, cost-effective and/or innovative methods for performing day-to-day operations
  • Serve as role models to others through positive and productive client and colleague relationships

Sustaining MIT: Meeting the needs of the present and the future

This award is for teams and/or individuals who:

  • Identifies the current needs of MIT’s environment, or community, or economy; implements or develops programs in any of those areas without compromising future resources.
  • Acts as a steward of MIT's campus and natural resources by implementing practices that improve the environmental performance of MIT, such as reducing waste, water, and energy; advancing low-carbon transportation options; recycling, or related strategies.
  • Supports the well-being and safety of the MIT community, through large and small actions: promoting or developing community wellness programs, access to healthy food and exercise options, reduction of exposure to harmful chemicals or unsafe equipment, or related activities.
  • Identifies or develops strategies to effectively manage budgets, transactions, and resources that result in more cost-effective practices.  
  • Is proactive in helping the MIT community to incorporate sustainability into their day-to-day work lives, by modeling sustainable practices, initiating workshops or trainings, or integrating sustainability into office operations; or other learning opportunities that influence people at MIT to adopt sustainable practices.

Outstanding Contributor: Working behind the scenes (formerly Unsung Hero)

This award is for teams and/or individuals who:

  • Consistently go above and beyond without fanfare
  • Fill in when and wherever needed and always perform at a high level
  • Take initiative to solve problems and improve work situations without being prompted
  • Demonstrate reliability, perseverance, and focus on results
  • Help others by sharing knowledge of Institute practices and resources or job-related skills

Collier Medal 

In honor of Sean Collier's model citizenship that far transcended his work, the Collier Medal will be given to an individual or group that demonstrates one or all of the following:

  • Is an unsung hero whose actions demonstrate belief in the concept of “community” and whose contributions exceed the boundaries of one’s profession
  • Volunteers their time by performing service to colleagues and/or community, and contribute to building bridges across the community
  • Distinguishes themselves by creating an environment where going the extra mile is a way of being, and by reaching for a new standard that helps contribute to successful community outreach
  • Consistently and selflessly performs acts of kindness that contribute to building and connecting the Institute and our community.
