8.1 Unions Representing Service Staff at the Institute
Identified below are the unions that represent the
Service Staff at the Institute. As noted in the preface to this Manual,
some of the policies in the Manual apply to employees who are represented
at the Institute by labor unions. In the event of any discrepancy between
the Manual as it applies to these employees and the applicable labor agreements,
the latter shall govern.
Included in this section on Labor Relations is information directed toward
the responsibilities of supervisors and union representatives in the conduct
of union business, and the relationship that exists between the unions
and the Institute. This information should be helpful in answering general
questions which might arise concerning that relationship. Elsewhere in
this Section are definitions of the supervisor's responsibility as an
agent of the Institute in fulfilling its contractual commitments (Section
8.2) and the matter of rights and obligations of supervisors and union
officials with regard to time off by union officials for the conduct of
union business (Section 8.3).

Employees' International Union, Local 254, A.F. of L. - C.I.O.
An international union representing two separate units of maintenance
and service personnel: one unit on campus representing employees in
the Physical Plant Department, the dormitories, the Medical Department,
and the Athletic Department; a second unit representing maintenance
and service employees at Lincoln Laboratory and the Haystack Observatory.
- Research,
Development and Technical Employees' Union
An independent union representing laboratory service personnel throughout
the Institute, principally technicians, machinists, mechanics, stock
clerks, drivers, laboratory aids, and others, in one bargaining unit
for Campus and Lincoln Laboratory employees.

Security Officers' Independent Union
An independent union of guard personnel representing employees who hold
guard positions at Lincoln Laboratory.
- M.I.T.
Campus Police Association
An independent union representing the police officers in the Campus
Police Department of the Institute.
