6.4 Discharge

An employee may be discharged for reasons that include, but are not limited to, performance deficiencies, violation of MIT policy, failure to adhere to conditions of employment, or serious misconduct. In most cases, a meaningful effort to address the issues will precede discharge though in serious cases, discharge may occur without prior corrective action (see Section 3.3.3). Supervisors must consult with their local human resources representative and their Human Resources Officer prior to taking such action, and the central Human Resources office must approve any discharge in advance. At MIT's discretion, employees who have been discharged may become ineligible for rehire at MIT. For termination during the probationary period, see Section 2.6.4.
