Four Types of Feedback

  1. Silence

    What is it?
    No response

    What is the intent?

    Maintain status quo

    What are the impacts? 

    • Decreases confidence (long-term)
    • Reduces performance (long-term)
    • Creates surprise during performance appraisals
  2.  

  3. Criticism (negative)

    What is it?
    Identifies behaviors or results that were undesirable, not up to standard

    What is the intent?

    Stop undesirable behavior/results

    What are the impacts?

    • Generates excuses and/or blame
    • Decreases confidence
    • Leads to avoidance
    • Hurts relationship
  4. Example: "You did a poor job running that meeting."

     

  5. Informative Advice

    What is it?
    Identifies behaviors/results that are highly regarded and specifies how to incorporate them in the future

    What is the intent?

    Shape or change behavior/results to improve performance

    What are the impacts?

    • Improves confidence
    • Can improve relationship
    • Improves performance

    Example: "Let’s discuss what happens when the materials are completed on time and the effect that has on others. Let’s discuss ways to make certain they are on time."

     

  6. Reinforcement (positive)

    What is it?
    Identifies behaviors/results that were desired, up to or exceeding standards.

    What is the intent?

    Increase desired performance/results

    What are the impacts?

    • Increases confidence
    • Improves performance
    • Increases motivation

    Example: "I appreciate how well done those letters are! They are neat, they have no errors, and they were sent on time. Thanks!"
