Career and Talent Management

MIT World of Work

A key aspect of talent development and career management is fostering a clear understanding of how an individual’s interests, skills, and knowledge align with departmental and Institute needs. A great challenge in an organizational approach to career development is helping employees and managers make this connection.

Creating a “development culture” is greatly enhanced by encouraging professional networks and by sharing information about work trends, critical skills, and knowledge. Understanding MIT’s needs and the “market” of work helps employees develop in their current job as well as prepare for future roles.

One of the top reasons employees leave organizations is due to a perceived lack of opportunity for advancement. To address this concern, departments can encourage cross-functional information sharing through the following mechanisms:

Job Family Information provides an overview of career fields and job roles at MIT. This information helps users understand the breadth of work at the Institute and discover skills and knowledge needed to be successful.

Networking and Informational Interviewing offers tips and resources on establishing a professional network with MIT colleagues.

Career Panels and Events describes ways that departments can share career information as part of a retention and professional development strategy.

Through such activities and resources, a department can send a powerful message about development. Employees are encouraged to research tasks, projects, and potential jobs to enable them to continue their contribution to MIT.
