Much of learning at work occurs through regular interaction with colleagues. As a manager, you can take different approaches to encouraging this kind of development.
- Informal Mentoring/ Peer Coaching: This strategy focuses on establishing ad hoc learning partnerships to help employees succeed in their current job and develop transferable skills for the future.
- Formal Mentoring Programs are typically department-sponsored initiatives designed to achieve specific development goals and improve the effectiveness of the organization. Formal mentoring programs typically include the following components:
- Assessment of needs and feasability
- Program design and duration
- Project managment
- Mentee/Mentor selection
- Evaluation
