What happens when you begin a leave of absence or a sabbatical?

See a summary of benefits while on unpaid leave.

Paying Your Contributions

For paid sabbaticals, you will continue to have regular monthly deductions from your salary.

For any leave that is three months or less, your contributions for both your health and/or dental plans will be held in arrears and you will catch up on the deductions upon your return to regular pay status. You will be charged double deductions until you have paid off the amount owed.

For leaves that are more than three months, the option to cancel or be billed for health and dental contributions is available. Contributions to your Health Care and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts do not continue during an unpaid leave of absence. However, if you plan to return to the active payroll before the end of the current calendar year, you may arrange in advance for the contributions you missed during your leave to be deducted from your pay when you return to regular pay status. As an alternative, you may cancel your reimbursement account because of your leave.

Note: Canceling participation renders any expenses incurred during your leave non-reimbursable. If you cancel, you may re-enroll provided you do so within 31 days of your return (see summary chart for details.) Remember, life insurance changes may be requested at ANY time throughout the year; however, your coverage cannot be increased while you are not actively at work.

Health & Dental Plans

If you are a member of an HMO, and will be away from your plan's enrollment area for more than 90 consecutive days, you should consider changing to a plan with an extended enrollment area. Detailed written information on your options is available from the Benefits Office.
