What happens when you adopt or have a child?

If the Benefits Office receives your enrollment form(s) within 31 days of your child's birth or adoption, you generally may make the changes listed below.

Use the forms in the box at right to enroll or change your coverage in a plan.

Health Plan

As a result of adopting or having a child, you may

  • Enroll in one of MIT's offered medical plans with family coverage or if you are already enrolled, you may

  • Add or drop an eligible spouse, spousal equivalent and other dependents

  • Cancel your coverage (if you and your child are gaining coverage through your spouse)

Dental Plan

  • You can add your newborn child to your existing dental plan

  • Change your coverage level from individual to family and add your eligible spouse, spousal equivalent, and other dependents

Flexible Spending Account Plans

  • Enroll in an account(s)

  • Change your annual contribution amount

  • Cancel your contributions (if you and your child are gaining coverage through your spouse)

Note: Any change you make to the Dependent Care Reimbursement Account Plan will based on your return from maternity/paternity leave date. Changes must be completed within 31 days of your return date.

Life Insurance

You may want to review your participation in the MIT Life Insurance Plan. You may add or increase coverage at any time during the year.

Beneficiary Information

You may wish to review and update your beneficiaries under the MIT Life Insurance Plan and MIT Retirement Plan to ensure they are current.


Please note that for all plans, you must meet the eligibility requirements for benefits participation. Please refer to the benefits eligibility chart to determine if you are eligible to receive employee benefits.
