What happens when you get married?

If the Benefits Office receives your enrollment form(s) within 31 days of your marriage, you generally may make the changes listed below.

Use the forms in the box at right to enroll or change your coverage in a plan.

Health & Dental Plans

As a result of your marriage, you may

  • Enroll in one of MIT's offered medical plans with family coverage or if you are already enrolled, you may

  • Add or drop eligible spouse and dependents (learn about Domestic Partner/Spousal Equivalents)

  • Cancel your coverage (if you are gaining coverage through your spouse)

Flexible Spending Account Plans

  • Enroll in an account(s)

  • Change your annual contribution amount

  • Cancel your contributions (if you are gaining coverage through your spouse)

Life Insurance

You may want to review your participation in the MIT Life Insurance Plan. You may add or increase coverage at any time during the year.

Beneficiary Information

You may wish to review and update your beneficiaries under the MIT Life Insurance Plan and MIT Retirement Plan to ensure they are current.


Please note that for all plans, you must meet the eligibility requirements for benefits participation. Please refer to the benefits eligibility chart to determine if you are eligible to receive employee benefits.
